In the present simple to be has three forms (am, is, are), but in the past it has two forms ( was and were). In the present simple, am is used with the subject (I), is is used with the subjects ( he, she, it), are is used with (you, we, they). In the past, was is used with (I, he, she, it) and were is used with (you, we, they)
In the affirmative forms, we have: subject + to be (am, is, are). ex: I am. / i was,/ you are. / they were. etc.

In the interrogative forms (questions), we have: to be (am, is, are) + subject ?. Ex: are you?, is he? was she? was he? were you?
In the negative forms, we, have: subject + to be (am, is, are) + not. ex: I am not, i was not , you are not, they were not, etc.
We can write the verb by using two forms: short forms and full (long) forms.
Ex: is not = isn't, are not = aren't, was not = wasn't, were not = weren't, etc.
In the short answers, we have: yes, subject + to be. Ex: Yes, i am / Yes, she is.
No, subject + to be + not. Ex: No, i am not. / No, she isn't.
In the full answers, we have: yes, subject + to be + object. Ex: Yes, i am / Yes, she is No, subject + to be + not + object. Ex: No, i am not. / No, she isn't.

was, were, wasn't, weren't: affirmative, negative y interrogative
To be (was, were): interrogative forms
